No Regret Friday

manny

My friends and I loved Friday’s because we knew that the weekend was here and it’s was party time.  We also could not stay in one place and have a few drinks, but had to be out and about driving from one friend to another, and from place to place.  This was our source of having fun.  Obviously we needed refreshments and we loved our beer (Castle Lager), so it meant that we would buy a case of quartz, as we believed that a car without alcohol and drinking glasses, was an ‘unroadworthy’ car.  We would just refill our beers enroute, whilst driving, as we drank the entire evening through to the next morning.  Around almost every corner was a shebeen.  The driver was also taken car of, not missing a single glass of beer.

So we went on a night out drinking, driving and partying until the early hours of the morning.  Unfortunately this one morning was grusome.  We, as passengers, fell asleep (or as we call it today, tieped) not keeping the driver company when he suddenly joined the slumber party.  When I awoke, I was lying outside the car, staring at emergency lights flashing before my eyes, bloody clothes, covers and emergency crew everywhere.  I was very confused, as if I had had a blackout.  As I slowly looked around, I discovered that two of my friends were on stretchers ready to be taken to hospital, but I couldn’t see the third.  Well guys, the sad part is that we lost him in the accident we had.  The car had rolled after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.  Apparently our friend, Carl Williams, was killed as the car we were travelling in crushed his skull while rolling.  We all felt very bad and guilty after our recovery in hospital and we could not even face his family.  To make it worse, we could not even say our goodbyes at his funeral as we were still in hospital.  Well guys, we still remember Carl.  If only we knew what the consequences would be and even if we could turn back time!

We are grown adults now and are more responsible and educated about the dangers of drinking and driving and how it can destroy life permanently.  All I can say is enjoy your liquor responsibly and never, ever attempt to drink and drive drunk!

My days of drinking 4 to 5 cases of quartz lager with my friends is gone, and so is our friend Carl Williams.  This a been a lesson to me and I hope our other folk can reconsider attempting driving whilst under the influence.  It’s surely not worth it!
