Scary Thought

My ex and his brother are famous for drinking and driving, and thinking that they will never get caught.  I was always the sober driver, I’d rather just not drink than have to deal with the possible consequinces of driving drunk, or being in a car with one of them driving drunk.

One night, my ex’s brother was so drunk that he could barely walk. I insisted he give me his keys and come home with us.  My boyfriend was also really drunk, but at least he had me driving him home. His brother refused and got into his car and drove off.  My boyfriend insisted that I follow him to make sure he got home ok, down some really dodge back road.  As we headed down this sand road, in the middle of nowhere, a cop car pulled out of nowhere. Obvioulsy seeing decent looking youngsters in new car, in the middle of nowhere, it must have looked obvious that we were trying to avoid main roads.  The cop started chasing us, fortunately my ex’s drunk brother was in front of us and managed to get away. The cop pulled me over, and I panicked even though I knew I was fine if they tested me (I had had 1 light drink early in the evening and plenty water after, but you still think what if that was too much?). Being a young girl, on a remote, isolated road, you also panic that what if you don’t get a trustworthy cop.  My boyfriend, at the time, was stupidly drunk and started giving the cop attitude, I told him to stop it and the cop still asked if I was sure that everything was ok.  They asked me what we were doing in the middle of nowhere and I explained to them that I was following the car in front to make sure he got home ok.  They asked me if this meant that he was the drunk one, I just said yes and that I apologised on behalf of him.  I was so mad that I had to be put through that because of the irresponsibility of one other.  I actually sometimes think that had the cops rather pulled him over, that it might have taught him a lesson as he still drives drunk all the time.

Even if you are lucky enough not to get caught in a road block, you could be the reason that an innocent person loses their llfe.  Imagine living with that on your conscience, as well as having a criminal record and the guilt of somebody’s death on your hands.  It’s just not worth it and it’s selfish, don’t drink and drive.  If you are caught, somebody has to be inconvenienced to come and bail you out, that’s if you survive a night in prison.  There are so many options now, GoodFellas, taxis or stay at home and party. And if you cant enjoy life without being drunk on every occasion, you have a problem – Anonymous.
